if you receive payment of an invoice before the date of the invoice how should you post this to the ledger

What programme do you use? Sage? Hansa? etc

l would just put the payment as the date of the invoice but l do not know your company so just ask a colleage or your boss.

The date will make no difference to the accounts.

Post the cash as the 20 Sept and put against the record a reference stating it was an advance payment (whether this was on a quote or Proforma Invoice only you will know). You will have no need now for a date change of the invoice.
