l quit my job to care for my parents untill their passing.. paid the funeral costs out of my savings and now have these questions that are lurking around.. and not sure what to do or expect. What if both parents pass and they do not have anything of value.. no home or assets. Also what if time had passed a year or two.. no probate no will because no values..Does the bills or debts go to the rest of the family? Or does it get written off. Is there anything that can be done to stop the hassling of collectors.. will the death certificates help? Pictures or documents of the grave? Personal money the child paid for funeral expenses etc ? Does the debt get split up? If so whom is responsible. Does the credit of the children get worse? l know there are different laws for states and not sure if that pertains to different states but in this case it is is for Washington state. No they CANNOT pass the debt on to the children. Yes send the bill collectors copies of the death certs. and ask them to stop calling.

Any debts left by your parents would be the responsibility of their estate to pay. Since you say there is nothing of value there is no estate so the debts would be written off.

No way this can legally come back on you.

Send certified copies of the death certificates to the bill collectors and tell them to cease and desist all communication with you at once.

Any debt owed would come from the liquidation of their estate (sale of their car, home, belongings, jewelry.). If there is nothing of value or if there is not enough to cover the debts then thats is where it ends. If you are being hassled then just provide a copy of the death certificate and that should satisfy the vultures.
